Should I Have Blinds and Curtains Together?

We always encourage our customers to get in touch with us about any of the questions they might have about their blinds, and one question we often receive is whether they can have both blinds and curtains together on a window.

The short answer is yes. Many people choose to have both blinds and curtains because it is a unique look that has practical considerations as well.

There is a longer answer, though, and it’s all about finding the right style of blinds and curtains that work well together. We’ve put together a short guide about the subject – keep reading for our thoughts.

Pick the style of blind first

First off, it’s better to pick the type of blinds you want before you pick the curtains. This is because the blinds will be the first fitting – the curtains will be fitted after. The blinds will have more spatial implications than the curtains, and therefore it’s no use putting up curtains just to find out that the windows are not suited to fit blinds in the first place.

Practical reasons aside, the most common styles of blinds are venetian and roller blinds, which both tend to work well with block colours. As for the blind material, choose aluminium or timber for a more natural and rustic look. Timber blinds are usually a warm colour – match the curtains accordingly.

We’re quite big fans of accent colours here at Redwood Blinds, and one of the favourite designs we saw was a white room with white blinds, but with bright orange curtains.

Be careful with prints

This is a quick one, but we believe that you should have block colour and one print for your blind and curtain combinations – never two prints. Combining two prints usually looks a little overpowering in our opinion.

Blinds more commonly come in a solid colour, while curtains can be found in many different types of print.

Size perception

You might not believe it, but the effect of curtains and blinds can result in much bigger looking windows. It’s all about the blinds coming up above the curtains by a little way. Try it and find out for yourself.

The impression of bigger windows can really help small rooms by making your ceiling appear to be taller than it is in reality.

Aesthetics

The most important point for blind and curtain combinations are the aesthetics they create. How will the blinds and curtains transform your rooms? In our experience, most people want cosy homes, rather than artistic creations. Adding curtains over the blinds is a big part of making things that extra bit cosy.

If you want something in between blinds and curtains, a personal favourite of ours, roman blinds, are a sort of cross between blinds and curtain, offering you the best of both worlds. But you can still add curtains over roman blinds as well if you want – try linen sheers.

Bottom line

We hope we’ve help you on your way to choosing the right combination of blinds and curtains. The fact that so many people ask us this question means that pairing blinds with curtains is likely on trend right now, and you can get ahead of the trend with this guide.
