Do Blinds Keep Heat In?

If you’ve been looking for ways to insulate your home, blinds may not have been at the top of your list.

We would even go as far as to say that they may not have been on your list at all as they are traditionally not perceived as key insulators. Most people think of things like insulating their attics and sealing up door drafts and end up overlooking blinds completely.

Can blinds really keep heat in though? The short answer is yes – but keep on reading for our full thoughts on the matter.

Heating And Cooling

Put simply, windows let heat in and out. A pane of glass could lose as much as 10 times the amount of heat that a wall of the same size could. It’s not just about heating either – by stopping the hot sun from entering your rooms, this also functions as an effective cooling strategy.

Any form of insulation over your windows will be effective to some degree, but a combination of all types is the best strategy. Blinds can be an important part of this. Sunlight entering the windows will get trapped between the glass and the blinds to produce a greenhouse effect.

If your primary goal is insulation, blinds are a great option for your home. To warm a room at home in the winter months, invest in interior blinds – they’ll absorb the sunlight, and they’ll provide insulation where needed.

Which Types Of Blinds Are Best For Insulation?

As with other objects, white colouring is best for reflecting sunlight – so white blinds are always a popular choice. Roller blinds and verticals look especially great in this colour, or you can choose darker colours of Venetian blinds or Roman style blinds. If white really isn’t your colour though, other blind colours can also be specially treated to absorb more sunlight.

If you’re after more effective cooling for your home, you might want to choose a special type of outer blind called a ‘solar screen’, similar to a blackout roller blind.  These types of blinds are essentially black screens placed outside your window, filtering the majority of the sunlight before it even reaches the glass, let alone inside your rooms. When winter comes, solar screens can be removed with ease.

Professionally Fitted Blinds

The trick to effective insulation from blinds is having them professionally fitted. Here at Redwood Blinds, we’ve seen countless numbers of blinds that have been improperly fitted. People often buy blinds and expect them to be easy to install, but this isn’t always the case unfortunately.

When blinds are properly fitted by professionals, there will be less gaps around the edges of the blinds to ensure effective insulation. They will also hang better for a more attractive appearance.

Bottom Line

There’s no two ways about it – professionally fitted blinds are an effective way of keeping heat in your home, meaning you can save energy and lower your heating bills.
